Find Your Why to Give Meaning to Your Goals

Give Meaning to Your Goals - Find Your Why

Earlier we talked about setting SMART goals, but once their set, how do you go about achieving them? How do you stay focused on your goal, especially when your struggling? The answer is very simple: find your why.

Ask yourself, what are the benefits of attaining the goal? Have you thought about what you want to be doing in a year? Three years? Five years? Ten years? Do you have crystal-clear clarity about what your main objective is right now? Do you know what you want to have achieved by the end of today?

If you want to succeed, you need to set goals. Without goals, you lack focus and direction. Goal setting allows you to take control of your life’s direction. It also provides a way for you to determine whether you are actually succeeding. However, to accomplish your goals you need to know why you set them.

The goals that you set need to be important to you. There needs to be intrinsic value in achieving them. When you set goals for yourself, it is important that they motivate you. Motivation is the key to achieving goals.

If you have little interest in a goal, then the chances of you doing the work that is needed to reach that goal are slim. The goals that you set need to relate to the high priorities in your life. Goal achievement requires commitment, so you need to feel a sense of urgency in reaching your goals.

If we have a big enough "why", we will always discover "how". ~Tara Semisch

Use these questions to help you clearly define why you want each of your goals.

  • What was the reason you decided to set this goal for yourself?
  • How does this goal support your long-term vision?
  • What about this goal motivates you and increases your energy to go forward?

Without a solid why, the how and what don’t matter. Goals must have a strong why behind them in order for us to put the necessary time and energy into achieving them. Discovering our why will give us that crystal-clear clarity that keeps us looking forward and helps us to move mountains to make our goals a reality. Why is the thing that keeps us going when things don’t go as planned? Your why is what will make you reach your goals despite setbacks, obstacles, and failures. Why keeps you excited and focused on the end result.

Take time today to write down the why for each of the goals you set earlier. Make a vision board to remind you of your why and place it where you can see it. This step is the one that can make or break your goals so don’t skip it. This step is vital in having something to get through the inevitable low places. If you know why you want to achieve your goals, you can focus on that when things aren’t going perfectly.
